Not A Physical Activity Boot
These Bates Men's Ultra-Lite 8" Tactical Sport Comp Toe in my opinion is { Not A Work Boot For Construction } !They're not a boot where there's a lots physical activity involved ok !These Bates Ultra-lites are extremely light on your feet including with the Composite Toe.If you are using these boots for just casually walking or standing for long periods of time is what I use them for, are a Perfect Boot !What I'll suggest is to purchase a size bigger because these Bates Ultra-lite aren't True to Size !The above information is based on my Past Experiences with Bates Boots.

Looks adequate
A tactical boot cannot have a side zipper so these are not tactical boots.I am old and stiff and wear boots when walking the dog in the woods and these look very good for that while the side zipper makes them practical for me.I just received this and will update further as I gain information but initially these seem to be very good bootsThey are much lighter than I am used to so I am uncertain yet on durability but the lighter weight is a huge advantage if they hold up.The seam on the left side of the younger on both boots is “sloppy”. It does look as if it is strong and functional with no rubbing however.I like the soles. They provide good grip and are not the knobby type that wears fast if you are on hard surfacesTime will tell, of course but I think. They should provide good traction in almost any conditions. The leather seems good and the fabric seems strongI remove the insoles and replaced them with custom orthotic inserts for medical reasons so cannot give a good opinion of the support as received. They appear quite cushy and are as good as any in this price range and far better than most. You might consider over the counter orthotics but try the stock ones first. The zipper seems strong. I cannot explain why but the boots are much easier for me to put on than most other side zip boots I triedIf they hold up , these are a solid 4 and I am particular on bootsThey stuff paper in the boot to protect the boot during shipping which is great, but the person packing these boots stuffed a lot of paper in very tightly and I am not exaggerating that it took a good 10 minutes to pull the paper out of the right bootWith my neuropathy it was a painful process. So far, that is about it.I find these to be the equal of the pair of “original” Vietnam Era Jungle boots for comfort while walking snd much easier to get on.Sizing seems consistent and accurate. I wear a 12 in most boots and these are a 12 so order your normal size

Despite The Name, These Are Not Work Boots
These are not work boots. The leather is supple, little to no break-in period, and THIN. The slightest bang and a deep gouge will appear. These boots are good for polishing up and looking smart. Don't even think about crawling or even crouching under your desk to pick something up you dropped. My foot size is, on average across all manufacturers, a 12.5 wide width. Size 12s are too small, size 13s are too big. The dilemma is that basically all boot and shoe manufacturers do not make size 12.5! This boot probably fits true-to-size, but for me it's too big since Bates doesn't manufacture size 12.5.In the end, I'm going to keep these boots, because the pro's of this boot outweigh all competitors despite being a really basic boot. If you don't care about your boot getting all dinged up, then perhaps I'd recommend it at the $80 or less price point.Pros:- Lightweight! Good option for occasional runs.- Quiet! No squeaks out of the box.- YKK zipper! A straight zipper path that won't bind.- Zipper pull silencer is sturdy with generous velcro material to avoid losing grip over time.- All composite design will let you go right through metal detectors.- Lack of a gusset behind the zipper allows you to easily get your foot in/out of the boot quickly without untying the laces!- Bates footwear shine up pretty well.- The laces stay tied. So many other manufacturers don't get this basic idea of what laces need to do.Cons:- LIGHTWEIGHT leather! Prone to gouging! Don't use for work. If the heel "leather" material was used throughout this would be one sturdy boot.- The inside heel is uncomfortable. It's very stiff. I stayed away from Bates boots in the past because of this issue; I hope it will go away as I break in the boot.- The heel's outside leather has a durable finish, which is great; however, I just wish that the same material finish was applied all over the boot. The front and sides are a tacky, soft leather that easily scratches. I'm so afraid of scratching these boots as I break them in before I decide to keep the pair and apply generous layers of polish.- The ribbed ballistic nylon on the lateral side of the boots ruins the look, in my opinion. It would have looked much better if they kept the nylon flat, like on the medial side of the boot. The ribbing serves no purpose. It just makes the boot less sharp in appearance and detracts from a clean appearance. I'm just glad it's not the ugly honeycomb look on Bates' new boots.- Minimal arch support in the stock insoles. You buy a cheap boot, you buy an additional insole.Others:- I was forced to purchase a separate insole to help take up the slack in the boot. I chose a pair of SOLE EV Ultra insoles- you heat them up to get a custom fit. I'll update this review if they improve the fit. UPDATE: Yes, the SOLE insoles do fill up the boot a bit. Not perfect, but better. Is it worth an additional $50? No!- This boot is not waterproof, which also aides in its lightweight. I would have liked a waterproof boot, but that requires a gusset behind the zipper. If the gusset is not big enough, then you can't get your foot in/out of the boot.

SATISFAITE

Great for wide feet!
I hesitated for a while before ordering this product as I was concerned about fit. I have a 4E foot and have peripheral neuropathy in my feet that results in sometimes extreme discomfort with footwear. These boots are EXACTLY what I needed. The extra wide fit is outstanding and I can wear these boots all day in complete comfort. I did expect I'd be returning them, and expected them to be like most others I'd tried, and that they just wouldn't be able to meet the requirements that I had for a wide and comfortable fit. These boots are protective, super light weight, and very very comfortable. I'm very impressed and they've become my go-to footwear, for work or anything else.Outstanding!

Don't expect the zipper to last
These boots are extremely comfortable and even more so when broken in. Unfortunately had the zipper break on me within 2 months of mild-moderate use. The boots still work well without the side zip however, just don't expect the zipper to last. (at least in my case)

Like walking on kittens.
It sure how long they will last but most comfortable and lightest work boots I've ever had and I am always unhappy with work boots. I've owed maybe 15 pairs these are the best.(so far).
